Kauai Summer of 2025: Day 9 (August 10 Hawaii Time)

Last Sunday, the day after we arrived, when I woke up Nana and Papa were not home. I had asked where they were and Daddy said they had gone to church. I asked what church was and Daddy explained that church is a place where people go to sing songs, listen to stories about being kind, and talk about God. It’s a place where friends and families meet up to feel happy and safe together. During the week Papa would leave here and there to do yard work at the church. I had been hearing about church so much that I felt that I wanted to see what it was with my own eyes. So yesterday at dinner when Nana said she was going to church I said that I wanted to go too.

So I woke up early and got ready quickly so that I could go to church. When asked if I wanted Mommy and Daddy to come too, I said that I wanted to go just with Nana. And that is what we did. I got all dressed up in my aloha shirt and headed off to Nana to church.

First there was kids’ club, not the actual service. I had a lot of fun there. We did some crafts and I got to use a lot of stickers. There were some older kids there who helped me out when I had a hard time. It was a fun experience!

After kids’ club finished, Nana asked if I wanted to stay for church, real church, and I said “yes” without really understanding what I was getting myself into. Nana had to stay a bit to clean up, but one of the older girls offered to walk me over to the church. So I held her hand and walked over to church. I was getting ready to help be and acolyte and light some candles, but right before it was time to go, Mommy, Daddy, and Papa showed up. Nana had called them and told them I wanted to stay for church. Then we all sat down and I experienced church. It was not what I expected it to be. It was a bit…dull. I stood up when everyone stood up, listened when everyone listened, and just didn’t know the words when everyone sang. After a while I started getting bored and restless. Even though a brought a couple of Tomica, I was told to be quiet when playing which made it very difficult. I tried to be as patient as I could, but about 40 minutes into the service, I said that I wanted to go. I had made a very good effort so Mommy and Daddy snuck me out and we headed home.

On the way home we passed by the restaurant that we went to for dinner last night and I immediately spotted and told Mommy and Daddy. They were very surprised that I recognized it. Especially since it was night time when we went. I just have a very good sense of direction and I am very observant of my surroundings.

When we got home I got right to playing. I had tried my best at church but it was just a bit long and not interesting for a little kid.

After lunch I did some crafts with Daddy. We made some really cool things that from this paper craft kit that Daddy got for me.

Then we went to play outside. We filled up some water balloons and had a lot of fun popping them. And since we were outside, we of course ended up looking for lizards.

After playing outside for a bit we had to go shopping. Mommy decided to make dinner and she need to buy some groceries. I actually didn’t have to go, but I wanted to tag along. While Mommy bought her ingredients Daddy and I wandered the store and chatted a lot. We had a lot of fun. We picked up a bag of konnyaku jelly, a Japanese snack, and I was so happy that I hugged it and said that it was my friend. I held on to it as we shopped. I later named him Hughug.

Daddy and I continued playing while Mommy cooked dinner. Then after a delicious dinner I went through my usual routine of ice cream dessert with TV. Tonight we started to watch Wild Robot. It was a cute and very funny movie that everyone enjoyed! We didn’t have enough time to finish it. I guess I’ll get around to it later.
